Fair Trade Booth in Trailwalker, Oxfam

On 12 November, we are invited to help in the fair trade booth in Trailwalker, Oxfam. By joining this meaningful event, we have gained more experience in selling fair trade products to the public, which is useful for designing our future plan to publicize the concept of fair trade.

Sharing Session in St. Paul's Convent School

On 20 October, Humanity in Focus was invited by St Paul's Convent School to give a sharing to their F.6 & F.7 students. The aim of the sharing was to inspire youngsters in Hong Kong to expand their focus to global issues, and have a thought on the value of money, and what they would like to pursue for their career. The sharing was a success, and we are hoping to organise more talks or sharing in secondary schools.

Sharing Session for Project SEE - Our Cambodia Journey

On 17 October, the two Cambodia Groups of Project SEE had a sharing session in HKU to share our voluntary services experience in Cambodia. It is good to learn that both groups have different exposure from the trips and are willing to take up a role in helping people in Cambodia even after coming back to Hong Kong.

Standup against poverty @ HKU

Launched by the United Nations Millennium Campaign, STAND UP is an exciting challenge to set an official Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people ever to Stand Up Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals.

On October 15 & 16, the world will come together and Stand Up and remind their governments that promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and help the billions living in extreme poverty, must be kept.
The purpose of the action is to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the eradication of poverty.

STAND UP is an initiative designed to coincide with Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) month of global mobilizations (www.whiteband.org) around the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty We need everyone to take part to ensure governments listen and take action.

Why standup?

Stand Up because:

- Every day 24,000 people die from hunger
- Every day more than 100 million children are denied the chance to go to school
- Every day 1.1 billion people have to drink polluted water
- Every day 8,200 people die due to HIV/AIDS

Sharing Session with Agency for Volunteer Service

On 27th September, Humanity in Focus were invited by Dixon Tse, one of the MCs in the Poverty Experience and Sharing Night, to share our volunteering experience in a sharing session organised by Agency For Volunteer Service (http://www.avs.org.hk). There were about 30 participants from the UK, who were on a cultural exchange trip to Hong Kong, attending the sharing session. Humanity in Focus has received very positive feedback from the sharing session, and many of the participants have signed up to become our volunteers! The leader of the group encouraged us before he left, "I will come back and see how you guys are doing next year!"

Poverty Experience and Sharing Night by HIF

The poverty experience and sharing night, organized by Humanity in Focus, was held on 16th September successfully. We were glad to have Mr. Chong Chan Yau, Senior Advisor of Oxfam Hong Kong; Mr. David Begbie of Crossroads International; and Mr. Albert Chau, Dean of Student Affairs, to be our guests of Honor.

"By the youth, for the youth, to the youth of the world" is the vision of our NGO. In our sharing, we were happy to spread this vision to our supportive fellow youths. We have talked about how life in rural Cambodia is like, what the situations and problems of street children are and most importantly, how we can work to make a change to their lives. By sharing our experiences in Cambodia, it is hoped that our experience can inspire fellow youngsters to work for the improvement of lives in developing countries.

The climax of the sharing night was our “poverty experiencing dinner”. In Cambodia it is very common for street children to starve because of the lack of food, resulting in serious malnutrition. We had also hope to share the experience of poverty to our participants through our sharing night. By giving them a famine dinner---bread and a bottle of water, our participants have reflected on the meaning of being in poverty.

Thanks to our guests, we have successfully raised HKD 16,098 for our NGO. They will be used to support the 3 current projects in Cambodia, and the rest will be used to support other projects which are being developed and our youth exchange program. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our guests for your generous support once again!
