Humanity in Focus - "Third Hong Kong Volunteer Award - Group Award"
On 6 November 2009, Humanity in Focus (HIF) received the Third Hong Kong Volunteer Award (Group Award) granted by the Agency for Volunteer Service at the Third Hong Kong Volunteer Award Presentation Ceremony (http://www.avs.org.hk/hkva/index.htm).
The Award is a territory-wide volunteer nomination event and is now in its third year. The judging panel includes Mr Vincent Cheng, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; Ms Christine Fang, Chief Executive of The Hong Kong Council of Social Service; and Mr Anthony Wu, Chairman of Hospital Authority Board.
HIF is much honored that our continuous efforts in promoting the concept of “Global Citizenship” in Hong Kong and development assistance to impoverished children in Cambodia have been recognized by the Hong Kong community. Yet, we believe that the Award does not only belong to members of HIF, but also to all thoughtful individuals who have supported HIF’s work through out the past 3 years. The progress we have made would not have been possible without their advice, active participation and opportunities given. Hereby, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude towards to everyone who has walked the miles with us, in particular, Mr. Chong Chan-yau, our Advisor and the Director of Student Development of HKU Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), for his nomination and continuous support.
The Award also signifies an encouragement to all passionate youths who dare to dream and more importantly, to REALIZE the dream. It verifies the fact that, despite any limitations on resources and experience, there is always a way for young people to make a change.
Since our inception in September 2006, HIF has always maintained the belief that everyone has the power to make a change. Hong Kong youth, being a relatively fortunate group, bears even greater responsibility to serve for the betterment of the less fortunate. Following the successful registration as a Hong Kong charity, HIF is determined to continue our endeavours with our overseas development projects, and at the same time, provide youth in Hong Kong with a platform where they may increase their awareness towards global humanity issues, and become advocates of global citizenship themselves. |

Global Citizenship and Social Service Week – “One whose heart is in the world”
On 28 to 30th October 2009, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) organized The Global Citizenship and Social Service Week which aims at increasing students’ understanding of global humanity issues and cultivating their sense of responsibility as global citizens – to be “one whose heart is in the world”.
In support of CEDARS’s cause, HIF set up a mini exhibition about our development projects in Cambodia at Yuet-Ming Fountain. Hundreds of HKU students visited our counter, discussed with us poverty issues in Cambodia and inquired about how HIF’s education and hygiene programmes were implemented. A majority of the students expressed that they had little knowledge of on-going situations in war-torn regions, including Cambodia where the Khmer Rouge took place in the 1970s, and the difficulties that younger generations of the country have faced in the aftermath.
HIF would like to express our heartfelt gratitude towards CEDARS for organizing the Global Citizenship and Social Service Week, in hope that HKU students will also seize the time ahead to perform social responsibilities as members of our global community. Let us work to water our world into a better place for the well-being of our fellow citizens!

Radio Interview - RTHK "Teen Power"
Three HIFers were interviewed by the live program “Teen Power” from
RTHK on 18 Sept (Fri) night. We were happy to present HIF through this
youth channel, as well as to have a chance for discussion on how Hong
Kong citizens may have contributed to mishaps in developing countries.

Sharing with Secondary Students in "Summer School for Effective Leadership Programme 2009"
On 19th July 2009, we successfully held a sharing session with 120 secondary schools outstanding students for the programme, “Summer School for Effective Leadership 2009”, a collaborative project organized by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and The University of Hong Kong. The speakers were mostly YGCP 09 participants, together with one of the founders of HIF. The special arrangement of an interactive platform enabled us to deliver a more in-depth message to the students, and we were deeply encouraged by the enthusiastic participation throughout the two hours. We also received positive feedbacks afterwards where students expressed interests in the concept of “Global Citizenship”, as well as the work of HIF. We hope to spread our message to more youths in the future!

Millennium Development Goals Forum at HKU
In the year of 2000 at the Millennium Summit, 189 world leaders
signed the Millennium Declaration which promised to free men,
women and children from the dehumanizing conditions of
extreme poverty and make the right to development a reality
for everyone. This is the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
which comprise 8 time-bound and measurable targets to
combat extreme poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, gender
inequality, and environmental degradation all accomplished by
the year of 2015.
In 2009, though we are at the half way to the accomplishment
of the MDGs, most of the youth in HK have not even heard
about MDGs. This is why HIF launched the MDGs Campaign
because we believe that every one of us should also take
responsibility for the realization of MDGs. The following activities
are included in the MDGs Campaign:
Yes, WE CAN! End Poverty in 2015
1. Articles about the contents of MDGs are issued and uploaded to HIF website weekly in February and please check them out in here.
2. Posters about the contents of MDGs are posted on the toilet doors on every floor of some HKU’s halls, in order to increase university students’ exposure to the related topics and make good use of their time to know more.
3. Exhibition – “Hope for Slum (Battambang in Cambodia)” will be set up in the HKU campus from 24th to 27th February to promote MDGs and fundraise for our overseas projects. We are so delighted that over 40 student ambassadors are recruited for spreading the message of MDGs together with HIF members!!
4. A lunch-time forum – “Combat Poverty, Save the World!” will take place on 27th February in Sun Yat-sin Plaza, HKU. Guest speakers Mr Alan Sze, the founder of China Education Association, Miss Fiona Shek from Oxfam Hong Kong and Miss Elaine Lau from Medecins Sans Frontieres Hong Kong will be invited to the forum and share their experience on combating poverty and making a better world.
