BIKE to School Campaign in Cambodia 2009

Last year (2008), Humanity in Focus (HIF) initiated the BIKE to School Campaign in two rural villages (Tngor and Kondul Strung Village) in Battambang, Cambodia. In June 2009, our inspection team, together with the YGCP 09 participants, re-visited the families whose children got the bicycles to ride to school. During the visit, the team assessed the effectiveness of the Campaign. Our team found that the Campaign has achieved its goal in promoting the importance of education to the parents and children in the villages. Families’ feedbacks were mostly positive and the team was impressed by the willingness of the families to maintain the bicycles within their capabilities.

Bicycle to School Campaign 2008

In the rural area of Battambang province, normally there is only one school in each village maximum. In average every child need to walk for 20 minutes to school. Much longer time will be needed during the rainly seasons as the unconstructed roads will become very muddy and difficult to walk with. The main aim of this project is to encourage more children to go to school by giving them bicycles, which reduces their travel time and energy from home to school everyday...

Ortres Village School in Sihanoukville

In 2006, HIF funded the construction of a non-formal village school, Ortres Village School, in Burnt Bridge Village, Sihanoukville, providing opportunities for the village children to receive education. Unfortunately, the school had to stop running in April 2007 due to land grabbing problems.

Water Storage for Schools

There are many communities in rural areas in Cambodia that do not have clean sources of water. By building water tanks in villages, villagers could gather water through the pipes which are fixed along the roof of buildings. When it rains, rain water would flow through the pipes and be collected in the large water tank. This can prevent water being contaminated and provide a source of clean water. Villagers benefiting from water tanks do not need to rely on river water or muddy pools. We have promised a school in one village that we have worked on as volunteers in the summer of 2006 to build a water tank there so school children and the community around could collect clean water, to ensure the health of the 200 kids studying there.
